Intraoperative autologous blood transfusion
Blood transfusion during the surgery is a basic principle of the surgical interferences. Without it, the XX century surgery could not be formed as a science. For almost a century the only factor of the patientís state stabilization during the surgery was donor blood. For a long time no-one could find any way of using the blood pouring into the wound. The thing is that blood from the wound contains admixtures of other tissues (muscles, fat, bones etc.), as well as damaged blood elements and free hemoglobin. The transfusion of such blood is dangerous for patientís life.
Donor blood can also contain harmful and dangerous factors, in particular, dangerous viruses and infections can be transmitted through it (HIV, Hepatitis B, C etc.). Searching for donors, lack of donor blood and its storing and transporting are well-known problems. Some patients refuse the blood transfusion because of their religious beliefs.
In 2007 the International neurosurgery center registered in the State Registry of Medical Devices of Ukraine the device for intraoperative blood transfusion, produced by ELECTA Sorin Group (Italy). This device allows to collect, filter, centrifugate, purify and send back the patientís own blood during the operation. All the processes are automatic and computerized. Now many-hour, hazardous operations with great blood loss are performed with no donor blood at all, while the patients feel much better after these operations. Transfusion complications are minimal. Autologous blood transfusion is used in the surgical treatment of scoliosis and kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, spine fractures, spinal channel stenosis etc.
